Despite the fact that I will likely never go on a solo backpacking adventure (still waiting for us to go to Alaska though with our wives, so hurry up on that), I thoroughly enjoyed this article. Some key points I loved:

On having a disposable camera:

Brigitte and I have almost always had one floating around since getting married! It's the greatest thing when one fills up, and we get the film developed. Something about those physical prints is so much more meaningful than the ~10K+ iPhone photos I have in my camera roll. Similar to journaling, I swear they take you back to a moment so much more profoundly than digital photos.

On journaling:

"This is tremendously important. It’s not merely good fun. We all have a fixed number of days, weeks, months, or years to live, and remembering your most precious moments through your journals quite literally allows you to extract more value and meaning per unit of time lived."

Consider me inspired to really try to start up in earnest again.

On some essentials:

"Laxatives

For when you’re blocked up.

Anti-diarrheal tablets

For when you need to be blocked up."

How could I not like the way you presented that?

Haha bro you are the best, thank you so much for reading this and leaving your thoughts.

Love the idea of having a disposable camera "floating around" at all times. You guys must have so many amazing moments captured by now.

On the journaling note, I love to hear that! I don't think it has to be a daily, or even weekly thing. I like to write little recaps after varying amounts of time, focusing on specific things that I've recently felt or thought about.

And hahaha, glad you appreciate the phrasing. Why say lot word when few word do trick?

It's all USA travel. I enjoy it and I have met and know well people all over the country. Most are local freelance employees that know me well too. I feel like I'm an amateur social scientist learning about the ways of Americans across the land.

Warm-to-cold climates trip me up with the packing, especially this time of year. Next stops: Dallas on Thursday and Indianapolis on Saturday. 🤷‍♂️

I guess I myself was one of those people you met as well, haha. That's so cool, and also reveals one of my favorite things about America: how huge it is! There's so much to see and explore even just within our own country.

And fair point about the packing—my advice in this post definitely doesn't hold up for shorter trips where the hot and cold might last only a day or two!

You're definitely doing something right because while I have no immediate plans to backpack around the world anytime in the near future (in my dreams!!) I just read every word of this😂 Seriously though, this was entertaining and not the dry, boring read one might fear an article "just" listing essential travel items would have the potential of becoming.

Hahaha I’m so glad, that’s fantastic😂 I’m also happy you said “near future” instead of just “future”

So cool to see - and compare. I travel 5 days a week, so my backpack and luggage are set up as "Go Bags", always. And we carry most of the same things!

Dang man that’s awesome, I didn’t know you traveled that much! Do you enjoy it or does it get inconvenient after a while? And glad to know we’re aligned on gear 🫡
